Largest desert in the world in terms of quantity of sand and thanks to its more dunes reaching up to 300 meters high, Liwa is the showcase of an authentic heritage with in particular its traditional forts and its date festival.
The area around Liwa has forts that were built in the early 19th century near water points, palm plantations and farms. Most of them restored, many of them were built by tribes to protect their territory. Situated atop a rolling hill, the fort in the heart of Liwa is a fine example of the region's fortifications. As you walk around, there are other forts such as Al Meel, Dhafeer, Al Jabbarah, Qutof and Muzeiraba.
Liwa will also appeal to gourmets since the date festival is celebrated every year in July. This event is organized by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage (ADACH) with the aim of encouraging farmers to further improve the quality of their date palm production.
In the heart of this magnificent desert, Qasr Al Sarab appears as an oasis of peace and serenity. With its 206 royal-styled rooms and private villas, this hotel is the ideal place to escape the stress of the city and open the doors to a luxurious and soothing experience that combines cultural passion and the tranquility of the desert.
All rooms enjoy a magical view of the dunes, are adorned with luxurious fabrics and are decorated in ocher tones. As for comfort, they are all equipped with a rain-effect shower, a large bathtub, an iPod docking station and free Wi-Fi access. Five categories of accommodation are available:
Al Waha : open for breakfast and dinner, the restaurant offers oriental and international cuisine. In the evening, a grill area, known as the “grill station”, offers lamb, kofta, steaks and fish cooked on the grill.
Al Fajal : during the cooler months (October to March), experience a Bedouin dinner in the middle of the desert with wood fires, oriental rugs and traditional Middle Eastern dishes.
Suhail : this upscale steakhouse offers the best cuts of beef from around the world. You can accompany your meal with a wine to choose from among 120 references. You can also have cocktails here in the evening.
Ghadeer : during the day, enjoy light snacks and refreshing drinks. In the evening, this space is transformed into a romantic space where you can treat yourself to dishes of local and Mediterranean inspiration but also taste the shisha.
The outdoor pool overlooking the dunes, surrounded by deckchairs and palm trees, allows you to cool off after a day spent exploring the desert. For total relaxation, the Anantara Spa uses traditional techniques such as the steam room with Jacuzzi or the black soap scrub.
The hotel has a desert excursion center that organizes camel treks, 4 × 4 dune rallies and desert walks. Anantara Qasr Al Sarab also offers a floodlit tennis court, a gym and a kids' club. You can also go horse riding, archery and fat biking (large tire bikes).
Light lunches are served at the Ghadeer located by the pool. Finally, at 16 p.m., Arabic pastries are served around mint tea at Al Liwan.
