Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has many key destinations such as the Gangaramaya Temple, the Viharamahadevi Park as well as the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque. The landscapes of Harabana are among the first that the rulers walked on and built hundreds of lakes and reservoirs there. These are connected to an elaborate system of canals which today provides irrigation for agriculture and industry. Anuradhapura is a city where the remains of ancient times intrigue researchers with their mathematical resemblance to the Egyptian pyramids. Founded in the 1400th century BC, it was the capital of Sri Lanka for XNUMX years.

Let yourself be dazzled by Mihintale considered as the original land of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. This Buddhist site is sacred and has an atmosphere of incomparable serenity. Sigiriya dominates a thick forest which it overlooks from 150 meters above the ground. On this inaccessible rock remain the ruins of a grandiose palace built by King Kashyapa. The rock evokes the silhouette of this beast, from where one can access a staircase leading to the summit. The ancient city, Polonnaruwa is one of the best archaeological sites in Sri Lanka. It is here that the kings of Ceylon settled after leaving Anuradhapura as their capital.

Best season to make a tailor-made trip to Sri Lanka :

The best time to discover Sri Lanka is from January to March for most of the country.
The city of Colombo and the West Coast are particularly appreciable during the months of January, February and March. The east coast is recommended from March to September and we will favor the months of February, March and April to visit the interior. The month of March is therefore ideal for visiting the entire country.

We can organize a meeting with these young priests by making a prior request.

Departure to ANURADHAPURA, for the visit of the first capital of Sri Lanka.

ANURADHAPURA - Anuradhapura, the remains of which intrigue scholars by their mathematical similarity with the Egyptian pyramids. Founded in the 1th century. av. AD, Anuradhapura was the capital of the island for 400 years. Placed under the patronage of three large Buddhist monasteries, it grows around immense reliquary buildings, the dagoba, built in memory of the Buddha. Their large brick domes are nowadays the object of the devotion of Buddhists from all over the world: the Thuparama, ancestor of all the dagoba of the island, the immaculate Ruvanveliseya, the most revered, and two giants, named Jetavanarama and Abhayagiriya. Holy city, Anuradhapura is also custodian of the Bo tree, the tree under which the Buddha experienced Enlightenment. City of the past, the royal capital has still kept many treasures: the royal gardens Ran Masu Uyana, the delicately carved half-moon threshold stone of the Mahasena Palace, the sculptures of Ratna Prasada or the Isurumuniya rock temple. The whole was registered as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1982.
Don't forget to visit Eth Pokuna (elephant pond); this gigantic man-made pond is located near Lankaramaya. It is 52,7 meters long and 9,5 meters deep with a retention capacity of 75 cubic meters of water. The water for this pond was supplied from the Periyamkulama Reservoir through a network of underground canals, and you can still see the parts of the water pipes made of boulders. These underground canals are still functioning after hundreds of years and in 000, after a season of heavy rains you could see water flowing from these inlets.
Then visit MIHINTALE
Travel time: About 30 minutes

Mihintale - Mihintale is a site in northern Sri Lanka, near Anuradhapura, where the famous meeting took place between Devanampiya Tissa and the emissaries of Ashoka (Mahinda and Sanghamita) who would have imported Buddhism to the island. The site would have been born from the commemoration of this meeting, one would have founded there the oldest stupa of the island. Mihintale has since become a Mecca of Buddhism. According to Faxian, nearly 2000 monks resided there at the end of the XNUMXth century. Today, a pilgrimage still takes place on the rock where the founding meeting of the Sinhalese king and Indian emissaries took place.
Return to the hotel.
Travel time: About 1 h20

After breakfast, leave early in the morning for Sigiriya to visit the Lion Rock.
Journey time: about 30 minutes

SIGIRIYA - Citadel of Sigiriya or "Lion Rock", romantic and grandiose ancient site with the world famous frescoes of the "Ladies of Sigiriya". It is one of the most surprising sites in Ceylon, considered the 8th wonder of the world. It is a colossal rock of red stones dominating the thick forest that it overlooks by nearly 150 m. On this inaccessible rock, however, remain the ruins of a grandiose palace, built in the 18th century by King Kashyapa. The rock evokes the silhouette of this wild animal, the entrance to the staircase which goes up to the top opens between the clawed legs made of bricks and stones. This aerial palace dominated a city of rare beauty, as evidenced by the ruins of a fortified "garden palace", surrounded by walls and ditches. One of the greatest curiosities of the rock are the paintings of the "Ladies of Sigiriya", splendid and perfectly preserved, in a crevice of the rock: XNUMX women are represented in these frescoes, but no one knows who these attractive creatures are. The ascent of the rock will be judged easy for those accustomed to hiking, more complicated for others…. If the foot of the rock with its enormous lion claws is already spectacular in itself, what a fantastic sight will again be offered to the bravest who will have reached its summit.

Departure to Polonnaruwa and visit to a local school along the way.
Please note that schools are closed on weekends and on public holidays. In some cases, you can visit a famous place for rice cultivation in Jayanthipura. You will then be able to see the villagers bathing and washing their clothes on the banks of the small rivers.
Departure to Polonnaruwa. Journey time: About 1 time

The River Kwai Bridge was filmed over the Kelani River near Kitulgala, but nothing remains except the concrete foundations for the bridge (and, in principle, the submerged wagons that plunged into the river from the climaxing scene ). Travel time: about 2 hours

COLOMBO - Colombo is the economic capital of Sri Lanka and its largest city by number of inhabitants. Located on the west coast of the island, it borders Sri Jayawardenapura, the political capital. It has 647 inhabitants; the population of the Colombo metropolitan region (made up of the districts of Colombo, Gampaja and Kalutara) is estimated at 100 inhabitants, covering an area of 5 km².
The name Colombo, attributed by the Portuguese when they arrived on the island in 1505, probably derives from the toponym Kolon Thota (in classical Sinhala: "port on the Kelani river"). Another hypothesis makes it derive from the Sinhalese name Kola-amba-thota (in Sinhala: port of the mango), which would have been altered by the Portuguese in honor of Christopher Columbus.
Colombo has benefited for about two millennia from its strategic position on the maritime trade routes, between Europe and the Middle East on the one hand, and Asia on the other, as well as from its natural port. It was the administrative and political capital of the island during British rule from 1815 to 1948, then during the first thirty years of independent Sri Lanka. Today it is the center of the country's economic activity, and hosts many business centers, head offices, restaurants and theaters. Among the symbolic places of Colombo, we usually cite the promenade of Galle Face Green, along the Indian Ocean, the Viharamahadevi Park and the Sri Lankan National Museum.
